The Person
If you’ve been around the Chicagoland basketball scene long enough, you probably know Christopher Spartz. Or at least you’ve heard of him. A native of Western Springs, Spartz starred at Nazareth Academy in the early 2000s before moving onto a four year college career at NAIA St. Ambrose. After graduating from St. Ambrose, Spartz played with the Washington Generals before moving into a post playing career in basketball. He coached and worked a variety of roles at places such as St. Ambrose, Ohio State, and the Costa Rican National Team.
More recently, Spartz has popped back up in his native Chicagoland as a speaker, trainer, and business owner. He frequently attends high school and college basketball games. Within the Spartz Sportz family of brands, he trains some of the best high school prospects in the area and prepares them for college. He also trains pros, college players, and even the next generation of hoopers as young as 4 years old. When the pandemic hit and players were looking for opportunities to play, you may have seen Spartz co-promoting Stealth Runs: The Next Wave with Dark Horse Recruits. The platform gave many seniors, juniors, and sophomores the chance to be seen by college coaches and scouts in what has been largely a dead period for high school basketball. Now, Christopher Spartz is looking to innovate with the introduction of his product SWSH to the basketball scene.
The Product
As hard as he works, as much time as he spends in the gym (just ask Mrs. Spartz), Christopher Spartz can’t keep an eye on his athletes all the time. There will be reps, practices, games without him in attendance with his watchful eye. If Johnny Buckets trains for an hour with Spartz working on his shooting form, but goes and plays eight hours the next day without him watching and reverts back to his old ways, then that shot will never be reformed. This idea of creating, fixing, and monitoring shooting form and motion, with or without a trainer/coach watching, led Spartz to create SWSH. SWSH is a couple things. It is a shooting sleeve that looks cool when you’re running around shooting triples. But it is a method “intended to enhance and simplify the teaching and learning process through the most dynamic shooting device on the planet.”
The SWSH product comes with one shooting sleeve and one compression sleeve with an adjustable band. By putting both sleeves on and attaching them via the band, it automatically puts a player in the correct shooting position. The band prevents the arms from doing things they aren’t supposed to. The SWSH gear locks a player into a correct, clean, repeatable shooting position and thus a correct, clean, repeatable shooting motion. After putting on the gear, Spartz advises a three step process to get these clean mechanics. 1. Have the ball down in front 2. Load up and 3. Straight up to release.
